MENJADI pendengar yang baik merupakan modal dalam berbagai posisi, sebagai teman, pasangan, atau rekan kerja. 

Seorang pendengar yang baik tidak hanya ingin mengetahui seperti apa cerita yang akan dibagi oleh lawan bicaranya, namun juga menghargai keinginan setiap orang, yaitu keinginan untuk didengar.

Untuk menjadi seorang pendengar yang baik, berikut ini tips yang dapat Anda coba.

1. Fokus pada lawan bicara

Sesibuk apapun Anda, hentikan sementara sifat multitasking saat sedang mendengarkan lawan bicara. Tunjukkan bahwa Anda fokus pada apa yang sedang dibicarakan. Simpan dulu ponsel Anda, abaikan dulu bunyi ringtone yang mengganggu pembicaraan (kecuali jika benar-benar urgent, tentunya), dan pastikan Anda tidak melewatkan sedikitpun bahan obrolan.

2. Hindari memotong pembicaraan

Memotong dan menyela pembicaraan bukan hal yang baik untuk dilakukan, terutama saat obrolan semakin serius. Selain tidak menunjukkan etiket yang baik, memotong pembicaraan juga tidak menunjukkan hormat Anda pada lawan bicara. Tahan dan bersabarlah sampai lawan bicara menyelesaikan kalimatnya.

3. Tunjukkan reaksi

Tunjukkan bahwa Anda mendengarkan ceritanya dengan menjaga kontak mata dan melihat langsung pada lawan bicara. Tunjukkan pula reaksi Anda dengan ekspresi wajah, seperti mengangguk atau mengernyitkan dahi.

4. Buka pikiran Anda

Cobalah posisikan diri Anda sebagai lawan bicara. Rasakan apa yang dialaminya. Hindari terlalu banyak berasumsi dan menghakimi dengan pola pikir yang sempit. Buka pikiran Anda atas kondisi yang dialaminya secara keseluruhan, tidak hanya obrolannya saja.

5. Hindari fokus pada diri sendiri

Saat lawan bicara mengeluarkan keluhannya, Anda mungkin akan terdorong untuk menceritakan pengalaman yang sama yang Anda alami. Ingat, fokus pembicaraan ialah lawan bicara Anda, bukan Anda. Jangan sampai rekan Anda yang mau curhat, malah dicurhati balik oleh Anda.

6. Aktif merespon obrolan

Seorang pendengar yang baik tidak hanya akan menyediakan telinga untuk lawan bicaranya. Dalam mendengarkan obrolan, Anda juga harus aktif memberi respon. Tidak hanya sekedar “oh…” atau “ya, lalu?” tapi sampaikan juga pendapat Anda tentang apa yang sedang dibicarakan.
